E-Way Bill for Goods Transport: A Simple Checklist for Shippers
An e-way bill is an electronic document generated on the GST system for movement of goods above a prescribed value. It links the consignment, the supplier, the recipient and the vehicle.
Before dispatch
- Check whether your consignment needs one under current rules and state-specific provisions
- Enter correct GSTIN, HSN, value and distance
- Add the vehicle number, or update it if the vehicle changes
- Keep a copy with the driver, digital or printed
Common mistakes
- Wrong vehicle number after a breakdown or swap
- Validity expiring on long routes with delays
- Invoice value not matching the e-way bill
Thresholds and rules are updated from time to time, so always confirm on the official GST portal. Your transporter can guide the logistics side of the process.
